"Breakaway" Overlooks
dramatic surf
"Breakaway" is our vacation and rental home at Sea Ranch. Designed and built in 1974 by a Danish architect affiliated with UC Berkeley School of Architecture. The home with its angles, colors, window seats and many windowed views represents the early breakthrough design of the unique Sea Ranch development. We have kept it in its original character, only updating the conveniences and maintaining the look and feel. The home is nestled amongst pines on a knoll that overlooks some spectacular coastal views. It is a quick walk to the dramatic shoreline filled with land bridges, coves, and is a reasonable walk to the North Recreation Center where lockers and shower, swimming pool, sauna, tennis basketball, and volley ball courts are available. "Breakaway"
has 3 floors and 5 levels
of living space (see "More Breakaway" for interior pictures).
Starting with the master bedroom and a California king bed on the ground floor with access
to a back patio. The entry level consists of an entry, kitchen, European bathroom
(separate water closet and laundry facilities), an inglenook surrounded by window seats
and a Cawley woodstove mounted in a fireplace, and a garden room that opens to a garden
and spa area. Slightly raised is the family dining room area that looks straight
down to the shoreline and opens to an upper deck overlooking the dramatic south coastal
view and ocean to the front.
Stairs lead up to a master loft with a California king bed and a large view of
the ocean and shoreline as well as a pine forest.
A spa
The Commons, shared open space, makes-up over 50% of the development area between the homes and includes: ocean front, meadows, forests and river frontage. The Commons is also a wildlife refuge for many species of plants and animals. Deer walk by the house daily. There are jack rabbits and over 200 species of birds. The monarch butterflies call it home. In the Spring, form late March to June, the meadows are a bouquet of native flowers such as wild Iris, lupine, Queen Ann's Lace, Indian Paint Brush, and in the fall the moors change color and take on a new look TopThe location is on Breaker's Reach, mid-way through Sea Ranch in unit 21. Sea Ranch is located 100 miles north of San Francisco, and 48 miles south of the town of Mendocino. The town of Gualala is 1 mile to the north just across the Gualala River in Mendocino County. The best route is to take 101 north from San Francisco to Penngrove exit (1 exit north of E. Washington St.). Take a left at the light and go over 101. Take your first right (along a road to the north parallel with 101) for just over 1 mile to the first left, Pepper Rd. Take Pepper Rd until it dead ends into the road leading to Bodega Bay (right). Take a right and continue to Bodega Bay; you are now on rte. 1. Take rte. 1 until your reach Sea Ranch. You will go through Jenner. After the Russian River crossing, bear left. Now begins the fun, 27 miles of coastal cliffs overlooking the dramatic north coast. You will pass by the old Russian fort, Fort Ross (worth seeing). You have an option to take Meyers Grade Road and travel along the ridge, returning to rte. 1 at Timber Cove. When you reach Pt. Stewart you are almost there; 2 miles to go. As you cross the white lines in the road you are in Sea Ranch (10 miles long and 1.5 miles deep). At Annapolis Rd on your right you can reach Rams Head Realty and the Sea Ranch Association offices. After you pass the large pale yellow barn (Stengel Barn) on your left, look for the 2nd left, Breaker's Reach. YOU'RE ALMOST THERE Catch the wave!
