North Island - Lake Rotorua      

We arrived at Lake Rotorua, a favorite resort.  The area is very volcanically active.  We  stayed 2 days.

     Crossing the Lake  We explored the lake on a rented pontoon boat.

                                                                                      to Mokoia Island This is an island setup by the Maori as a bird sanctuary; the only predator free bird sanctuary in New Zealand.  We purchased a permit to hike on the island and found many interesting birds. We heard and then saw many exotic birds.   At first they were timid and then curious up to the point that a few followed us nearly landing on us several times. 

 On the return trip the reflections on the lake were vibrant.   As storms gathered off in the distance, their dramatic clouds created sculptures on the water surface.   Top
