North Island - Wai-O-Taupo

Wai-O-Taupo

We took in a number of volcanic areas North of Lake Rotorua (Hell's Gate) to Lake Taupo (an area known as Wai-O-Taupo), which turned out to be the most outstanding area for diversity and size of hot springs and caldron activities.

The area between Lake Rotorua and Lake Taupo is one of the most active geological areas in the world.

Devil's Lake                                                Edge of a huge caldron                         A smoking vat of tars and sulfurs

                   Devil's Bowl                                                             Devil's Pool                         Wai-Pu Pot

and then a river gorge formed by the water running out of Lake Taupo

The Lakes, river and hot springs were all within miles of each other.  As we entered Lake Taupo, steam was rising from some of the street drainage systems.  There is a crease of activity on the South Island that is one of the most active geological areas in the world.   It runs from the east coast to the middle of the island and ends at Lake Taupo and the volcanic range to its south.
